Being mindful involves being in the present moment; being aware and accepting of thoughts, sensations and emotions, but without any offering any judgement. It is a powerful tool in business which can help employees to improve efficiency, decision making, empathy, adaptability and focus.

Research is providing more and more evidence that those who receive training in mindfulness can stay focused for longer, offer a wider range of creative solutions to problems, more quickly absorb and process new information and have an increased capacity to cope with change.

These are all important in today’s workplace.

The gold standard mindfulness course is the 8-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction programme.

This approach, which was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in the late 1970s, is widely researched and evidence based. As with many new skills, the brain requires a period of repetition to embed the new approach and this is achieved through consistent practice over the 8 weeks.

The course will give participants guidance and a framework for how to live more mindfully and experience the benefits that come with being more fully in the present.

In the meantime, here are a few mindfulness tips for the workplace:

  • Take regular breaks and, during the break, as best you can just be present. If you are having a cup of coffee, really notice the warmth of the cup, the smell, the taste. Give your mind a break.
  • Stick to one task at a time and, when you notice your mind wandering, notice where it has gone and then bring it back (kindly) and refocus on the task you are doing.
  • Really listen to your colleagues. Notice if you are trying to formulate answers before they have finished speaking and see if it is possible to just listen.
  • During the workday there are times when it is easy for the mind to wander off, such as in a long meeting. If you find yourself thinking about a past incident at work or worrying about an upcoming client presentation, just bring your attention back to the present and focus on something simple like your breathing. This will help you to stay calm, alert and receptive to what is happening in the present.
